This chapter traces the intellectual rebellion against the seventeenth-century bifurcation of nature. It argues that the period from 1880–1930 was not merely a deconstruction of the classical worldview but a period of proto-engineering that assembled a minimum viable pre-toolkit for a non-bifurcated cosmology. This pre-toolkit, forged under the dual pressure of philosophical design and physical discovery, provided the essential specifications—for novelty, stabilization, and stratification—that would be operationalized by the formal engines detailed in Chapter 3\.
