Biofilm
Microbial cells secrete a polymeric matrix and settle into a collective surface architecture. Individual motility is constrained; nutrient channels and stratified oxygen gradients appear; antibiotic tolerance rises. What is maintained is not a thicker cell but a shared enclosure with its own cessation order—matrix failure, channel collapse, dispersal. The biofilm becomes a diagnostic specimen for absorption and failed stratification: coordination without a truly enveloping authority, a durable-looking collective that can still unravel into planktonic parts.
